My favourite poem

That's how I feel most of the time especially now for the past week. Hope you like the poem as much as I do. :)
  Paul Laurence Dunbar (1872-1906)
              We Wear the Mask
    WE wear the mask that grins and lies,
    It hides our cheeks and shades our eyes,—
    This debt we pay to human guile;
    With torn and bleeding hearts we smile,
    And mouth with myriad subtleties.
    Why should the world be over-wise,
    In counting all our tears and sighs?
    Nay, let them only see us, while
            We wear the mask.
    We smile, but, O great Christ, our cries
    To thee from tortured souls arise.
    We sing, but oh the clay is vile
    Beneath our feet, and long the mile;
    But let the world dream otherwise,
            We wear the mask!

  1. Oh, Tea, where do you dig this poem from? You can't even imagine how much it touches my soul... Thank you for that :)

  2. I learned it in high school. I know it by heart since then. We had a Fulbright teacher from the US in 1994 and she taught us several pieces of black poetry. The other one I like A LOT is For My People by Margaret Walker. She's also written - We have been believers - this is also very very powerful! :)
